Google Maps Gets Personal
A recently announced update to Google Maps will use machine learning technology to tailor the app for individual users. The update works by refining results in the Explore tab so you don’t get bombarded with unsuitable suggestions.
Instead of picking places at random, the new version of Google Maps will be able to find more suitable suggestions based on information provided by algorithms and local experts. Anytime you want to explore a new neighbourhood, it’ll show you top-trending nearby venues and attractions.
In addition to the updated Explore tab, the Google Maps update will also offer the following features:
- Your Match – If you can’t decide where to eat, Your Match provides you with a score indicating how likely you are to enjoy a restaurant. Your score will be generated based on a range of factors, including what Google knows about the business, places you’ve eaten in the past, and how you’ve rated other restaurants. It’s kind of like a dating app, but for food.
- Group Planning – Trying to hang out with several people at once can be a logistical nightmare. The Group Planning feature minimises the stress involved with organising group activities by letting you share a shortlist of venues with your social circle. Everyone can then vote on where to eat.
- ‘For You’ tab – Designed to make FOMO a thing of the past, the ‘For You’ tab allows you to follow your favourite areas and restaurants. This means you’ll never miss out on events and special deals.
Keep an eye out for these updates in the coming months as they’re gradually rolled out on both iOS and Android devices.
