What You Missed Last Week in Digital

Greetings! We hope Monday hasn’t been too hard on you. If you’re having a little trouble getting into the swing of things this week, why not cheer yourself up with some tidbits from the digital world? Yep, it’s that time of the week again, when we look back at everything that’s gone on in the industry over the past 7 days and fill you in on all the goss. This is what you need to know:

Expanded Text Ads Get Mixed Results

Remember back in June when we talked about text ads and Google’s plans to give them a makeover? Well, the newly expanded Adwords format went live early last week, and so far, results appear to be mixed. Independent marketing agency Merkle did an analysis of click through rates and found that expanded text ads were responsible for a 16% jump in non-branded queries. That’s not quite as high as the 20% Google touted when the changes were first announced, but still, not too shabby. On the other hand, branded content didn’t do nearly as well, with click-through rates remaining nearly on par with standard text ads. Merkle did add that it’s still very early days, and predicated that gathering more in-depth data on the expanded format’s performance will get easier over time. Watch this space.

Oracle Buys Netsuite

Multinational technology corporation Oracle has spent a cool $9.3 billion on acquiring NetSuite, a provider of cloud-based business software. Oracle has gone on a bit of a spending spree lately, having recently acquired several other companies. So far this year they have purchased cloud computing firm Ravello Systems, cloud payment company Textura, cross-device tracker Crosswise and energy software provider Opower. Guess you’ve got to spend money to make money.

Tumblr Offers Users a Piece of the Pie

Tumblr continues to be the hipster kid of social media sites. In an effort to generate some much-needed revenue, the company announced on Thursday that it would start releasing ads across its network of blogs. However, these ads are a little different from what you’d see on Facebook or Instagram. For starters, they are optional. If a Tumblr user doesn’t want an advertisement to appear on their blog, the can simply adjust their settings to opt out. However, in a statement released on the official Tumblr staff blog, the social network announced that users would be given the opportunity to make money off their blogs, “later in the year.” No one is really sure how exactly it’s going to work yet, including Tumblr themselves, but it sounds like a pretty interesting concept.
